Excel as a DBMS

Over the years, I have seen many organizations use MS-Excel as a database. I have also been tempted and joined the ‘Cult of Excel’ from time to time.

This morning, I stumbled across this interesting article, regarding the use of MS-Excel within organizations.

Back again

Well, after 2 years to the day, I have decided to reactivate my IT blog.

A lot has happened over the last 2 years; and also not that much.

I am currently doing some university work; in the area of software engineering. Interesting stuff at this level.

Within the U2 world, things have also changed; and not so much.

As everyone knows, IBM sold the U2 product family to Rocket Software. That was a recent thing; in Sept/Oct of last year. But has anything changed? More about that later.

I have been working with Python and the ability to use Python with UniVerse interests me.

So, that will be the current theme – Python and multivalued data based systems…

U2 in NZ Top 100 ICT Users

I have returned to New Zealand after being away for 18 months. So, I have been on the lookout for information regarding the current status of IT within NZ, in-particular multi-value products.

The New Zealand MIS magazine had it’s top 100 ICT user list in the May 2008 issue. It lists the largest IT users, based mainly on the number of screens within the organisation.

y2k is now m4c

Remember all the excitement about the year 2000? Yes, it did affect multi-value environments; well it did where I was…

It is back, but in a new form and this time it has absolutely nothing to do with computer systems!

Search now works again

Since the new install of WordPress 2.51, search now works again. It is at the top of the right hand column.

I hope that it helps.

WordPress, categories, record keys and more

Well, I have had fun over the last couple of days; upgrading this web site blog to the new version of WordPress.

It all started with the need to upgrade the underlying operating system on the virtual host that I have. It was a very old version of Fedora Core and I now had the opportunity to upgrade to CentOS 5.1, which I prefer.

Rebuild

I am rebuilding my web server so the web site may be off-line for a day.

Cheers,

RHCE

I have been gearing up this weekend for the RHCE course and exam that starts on Monday.

I am certified on Red Hat version 7, which is now a bit out of date. So, it’s 4 days of intense training and then 4 hours of exams on the Friday. It is going to be fun, but also very hard work to bring myself up to date to RedHat 5.1.

Then the week after, I start on a course and certification for PHP through Zend.

No rest for the wicked…

Help is new!

The PE version of UniVerse 10.2.8 (windows) was released this month. One of the new features is the UVHELP command. This seems to be brought across from Unidata.

During the install of UniVerse the HELP files are now indexed (so a message flashes up and states). This is the HELP.FILE and holds all the normal verb help descriptions along with the BASIC and CONV etc. All help text is now in one file.

To use the new UVHELP feature, type UVHELP at ECL. HELP still works but according to the release notes it will be not be updated.

Paging between screens is now done via the letters ‘U’ for up and ‘D’ for down. The page up and page down keys no longer work. ‘Q’ to quit rather than escape.

The introduction text displayed from entering ‘UVHELP’ does get messy as the lines are too long and wrap around.

From a quick look at the code BP/UVHELP, a USER.HELP can be created and updated, where the contents can become part of the UVHELP system. Nice…

It also seems that some of the BASIC extensions have also been added, so it looks rather promising.
